Dan Engelland bought his very 1st guitar a month before he graduated from High School. It was, of course, a 69 Fender Telecaster. This sudden "career" move unfortunately, had a very negative impact on his parents who had dreams of their adopted son pushing a lawnmower for the Burnaby Parks Board. Nevertheless, dispite years of poor decision making, wild women and song, Dan kept his six string close at hand. Through the grace of God and his loving Grandparents, Dan finally gained the confidence to "go pro". Dan Engelland has performed and toured with many acts throughout Canada and did a 7 month tour across the States. Playing in a variety of styles such as Rock'N'Roll, country, country rock, corporate show bands, R&B and his favorite, the Blues. In the mid 80's Dan had a Blues band called the Cobras. During that time country music was mainstream and the pay scale was, for cover bands, premium. Dan freelanced as a "gun for hire" to various country rock bands, and he found that country music was very intertwined with the Blues. Dan also appreciated those incredible country pickers and has a vast amount of respect for their virtuosity.
Years of on and off the road gigs plus missing his young son, Dan wanted something to stimulate his musical interests, keep him close to his boy and possibly achieve financial independance. Dan leased a 2900 sq.ft. basement of a downtown building and builds a blues club in Prince George.
Dan had imported top notch performers from all over North America to his 136 seat venue in downtown P.G. After a year of an unfair and difficult partnership, 2 more years of hits and misses on his own and just 2 weeks late with a month lease payment, the Landlord padlocked the doors. The 4th Avenue Blues Club Inc. was no more. Dan felt the hard blow but at the same time a huge relief. He had packed up his young family and headed for Kelowna for a fresh new start. Once there Dan's love and feel for the blues made some waves and ruffled some feathers. Along the way he met and performed with some very talented bands and musicians 1st and foremost Mr. Les Copeland, Glockwork Orange, and Ricky and his Bluecats.
Dan Engelland and family moved to the Northern Okanagan Shuswap area and reside on Gardom Lake between Enderby and Salmon Arm.For the past year and a half, Dan has performed extensivley throughout the region with his band The HooDoos. Layin' it down to appreciative audiences at Lorenzo's Cafe, The Howard Johnson Inn, The Smoke House, The Blue Gator, The Naramata and the Blues Festivals in Revelstoke and Kelowna to name a few.
Dan and the band performed and were held over at the grand opening of Moe's Blues club in Vernon. Dan Engelland's CD release was held during the opening as well. He also held a CD release at Sylvia's Smoke House in Salmon Arm. It was sold out both Friday and Saturday. The self titled CD is called "More Than Anything". Recorded at Image Audio Studios in Vernon, it was engineered by Jeff Long who also co-produced and helped Dan arrange the material. The CD includes some of the finest musicians around, such as Aaron Anderson on the drums, a very cool and gifted musician. Todd York on the bass and Lody Kieken on the Hammond round off a fine cast of musicians. Dan Engelland's unique approach, stingin' guitar style and "raspy" vocal is a definite testimonial to the Blues.
